San Antonio Spurs fans are very familiar with Patty Mills.  The Australian native has become a staple for the successful Spurs. While we love the outside shooting, passing, and lock down defense of Mills, he is a much bigger thing for the young upcoming basketball players of his native land. He represents a dream that an Australian can not only make it to the biggest stage in the basketball world but be successful on that stage.  On Saturday night there was no question who the Radford Prep players modeled their play after.

With a very tough Varsity boys division the Radford Prep team got everything you would want in a division.  They struggled with the very athletic and big Texas Bandits in which they lost in overtime. Their fundamentally sound passing and shooting were a success in both wins against San Antonio Thunder and San Antonio Warriors in which they had to overcome deficits.  Working as a unit they were never out of any of the three Saturday games. Led by division MVP James Martin (19.7ppg) and Lars Henson (14.1ppg) the Aussies found themselves in a position to take back home the Excel Cup.  With 7 seconds left and the ball down by 1, Radford Prep’s Wesley Lo took the inbound and dribbled three times launching the ball just past the half court line banking it off the glass for the last second game winner to take home the championship.

The biggest thrill for me in this great game is to see the partnership and brotherhood between these great athletes. After a hard fought division that young men from to different continents can come together and share the moment together. Always reminds me why this is the greatest sport in the world.
