The Excel Wintefest in Austin kicked in Sunday at the amazing Round Rock Sports Center and there was plenty of talent from all over the state of Texas. The capacity crowd was treated to multiple nail-biting games.
One of those back and forth games was the 7th Grade championship between the Phflugerville Shockers and the Round Rock Rimrockers. The Rimrockers controlled the game most of the way led by Traeshaun Leak (17pts 4 steals). Leaks favorite player is Steph Curry of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and you can certainly see that he patterns his game after Curry. In the second half the Pflugerville Shockers fought back led by Leak in a Curry like come back performance to take their first lead. The game came down to the last couple possessions with the Shockers being clutch and pulling away with the victory.
The 8th Grade Silver Championship was a match up between the Austin powerhouse New Era and a very talented group from Temple. The Temple Flyers dominated their pool play games with talent from multiple positions including Elcid Smith (23 ppg) and Chuey Hernandez (13 ppg). But the New Ere team led by Max Smith’s 19 point and 5 assists would prove to be a challenge. New Era’s outside shooting and tough play under the basket challenged the Temple Flyers at times. Its every basketball fan to see a match up between two different styles of play. Ultimately the athletic juggernauts of the Flyers proved to be too much for the Austin New Era team as they took the Excel Cup back to Temple.
Another fan favorite match up came in the Platinum High School division between the San Antonio Flight and the Temple Dreamteam. The Flight play with a type passion that reminds you of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. Great defense, passing, and outside shooting made the Flight a tough match up all Sunday. In the finals they came across a very talented Temple Dreamteam team that matched their intensity in the championship game. Thanks to the outside shooting of the Flight the game went back and forth. When the dust cleared Temple Dreamteams Travece Coleman (26 pts) was too much for the undersized Flight as the Dreamteam took a 2nd cup of the day back home to Temple.
Probably the most talented group in the event Sunday was the 6th Grade ATX Blazers. Led by Beck Raymond (14 ppg 7 rpg), the Blazers were bigger and faster than their opponents. They did get a challenge from the K Town Bulls of Killeen who might be the second or third best 6th grade team in Texas. CJ Evans poured in 18 points and Iv’rson Lavizzo addes 12 to give the Blazers a much tougher game in the championship but the Blazers were too touch and kept the Excel Cup home in Austin. Both teams will have a highly anticipated rematch this weekend in San Antonio at the Excel BIG4 Championships.
Who is going to touch Ray Jackson’s Rising Stars 4th Grade team? That is yet to be seen. Cant remember the last time this group of young men have lost. They held up their reputation with a dominating performance Sunday going 3-0. They will get a challenge Dec 19th at the Excel BIG4 Championships against three of the best 4th grade teams in Texas. The San Antonio Rebels played them tough in the summer and both teams have improved greatly. Cant wait to see that match up this weekend in San Antonio.
