The Excel Summer Showcase has always been a great event to do exactly what it says by showcasing all the talented teams, players, and coaches we have in the State of Texas. From the first and second graders of the Mo Williams Blue Chips putting on an offensive barrage to the high flying talent filled varsity division; this years Summer Showcase would only elevate the prestige of the event.

In the Crimson 2nd grade boys division the Mo Williams Blue Chips showed they are the team to beat in Texas right now.  Sponsored by Cleveland Cavalier’s Mo Williams, the team has been built around speed and offensive power.  Their full court press tortured opponents all weekend forcing the biggest basketball fans to focus on their games over other divisions.  Truly one of the most entertaining teams I watched all weekend.  In the championship Sunday the San Antonio Bulldogs would be the last team standing in the way of the Blue Chips taking home the Excel Cup.  The Bulldogs fault hard in the 1st half but the waves of Blue Chip players wore down the Bulldogs. Congratulations to the boys from Houston.

In the Silver 8th grade boys division teams from all over the state of Texas converged on the Alamo City to battle.  The El Paso Hurricanes, Cap City Elite, San Antonio Venom, and Alamo City Thunder all showed strong in Saturday’s pool play action but Sunday only the strongest move on to the championship.  This Sunday it would be the El Paso Hurricanes and the Cap City Elite.  A rematch in which the Hurricanes beat the Cap City Elite in pool play by double digits.  The Championship would be a different story.  Cap City looked like a different team jumping out to an early eight point lead led by Deandre Wilson’s 17 points. The El Paso Hurricanes who had run threw pool play, would fight back by halftime and even the match.  Led by Mason Chambers (SEE VIDEO) 19 points the boys from El Paso would go back and forth with the Austin boys.  The Hurricanes had many chances to take the lead and could not convert at the end of the game and the Cap City Elite would escape with a championship finish.  Cap City’s Elijah Washington (SEE VIDEO) had a strong 14 point performance in victory.

The Lavender High School girls division boasted teams from Corpus, Houston, and Nixon but the San Antonio Rise would be the strongest of the very talented High School girls field.  In the championship, Marie Ferdinand’s Rise girls would have to go threw the Texas Dream squad from our coastal neighbors in Corpus.  Both teams came in with an undefeated record but the Rise team seemed to be the sharper team on Sunday.  Jumping out to an early lead led by Kayla Dotson, the Rise never looked back. Congratulations to the Rise girls.

The Gold Junior Varsity boys division was the events largest with some real heavy hitters.  The Houston Lamar Elite, Port Arthur Warriors, San Antonio Falcons, Fredericksburg Die Zeigen, Baytown Blitz, San Antonio Team United Gold, and El Paso Texas Elite all showed strong pool performances Saturday but the these strong performances would be tested against each other in Sunday’s playoffs.  The semi finals came down to the San Antonio Falcons VS Team United Gold and the Port Arthur Warriors VS the Lamar Elite.  Falcons were able to sneak by Team United Gold to reach their second championship in a row.  The Port Arthur Warriors would fail to reach their 3rd championship in the last three weeks by losing to Lamar Elite.  In the championship, Lamar Elite showed that the deep talent pool with size and speed that made it a tough 28 minutes for the Falcons.  In the end Houston would be welcoming back their Gold Champion Lamar Elite.

Lamar Elite wasn’t the only Houston team that would take an Excel Cup back home.  In the Bronze 7th grade division, Houston INYAFACE would revenge a pool play loss in the championship against the San Antonio Falcons.  You would be able to tell from the tip that INYAFACE was a different team.  The boys from Houston would answer every Outlaw run all the way to the end until they raised the cup in victory.
