Excel Tournaments does a showcase once in the Fall, Spring, and Summer and these events always live up to their true purpose; to showcase the amazing talent from around Texas. The Spring Super Showcase has become one the biggest of these showcases in the past years with teams traveling from all over Texas to showcase their teams. With 150+ teams in the field the 2016 Super Spring Showcase set the bar even higher than previous years.
Saturdays Red and Green American Divisions were full of teams coming from out of town to play the best San Antonio could offer. Tracy McGrady’s sponsered team GR Sports brought a very talented 3rd and 4th grade group to the Alamo City. The Houston Trailblazers and their crowd base also came down with a very talented team in both age divisions. In the Red 3rd Grade division it would com down to a championship between the very hot Alamo City Hoop Squad and Houston Trailblazer team. The Hoop Squad led by Camrin Garza’s scoring looked like they might have found their match with a very deep Houston Trailblazer team. The steady scoring power of the Hoop Squad would prove to be too much for the Trailblazers. In the Green 4th Grade division the championship became a battle for bragging rights in the Houston area between the Houston Trailblazers and GA Sports. With Htown representing hard the tempo was frantic between the two rivales. The Houston Trailblazers had the ultimate weapon in point guard Damien West though and his playmaking ability proved to be the determining factor in his squad taking home the Excel Cup.
In Saturdays Orange American 6th Grade boys division the Gulf Coast Magic of Galveston took on the best San Antonio 6th grade teams and came out with a championship. They had a tough battle in the semi finals against the Crossover Kings of Victoria before having an epic championship battle against the HD Toros. Ultimatley the guard play of the Magic proved to be too much. While the 6th Grade Gulf Coast Magic took the early championship home the 8th Grade Magic team proved to be the most impressive of the two teams. With a loaded 8th grade bracket the Gulf Coast Magic group battled threw San Antonio teams to win the championship in convincing fashion. Point guard Dayton Booker put up big numbers in both points and assists to run circles around his defenders.
In Sundays Silver National division we would see the most winning 8th grade team battle it out. This loaded bracket included Under Armors Hardwork, Palma’s Blue Devils, State Champion Team Gervin, and the Sun Devils. The Sun Devils have battled injury and commitment in the fall but played their first event of the Spring with their full healthy roster. This equated into three tough victories and a championship finish. In the first round it took overtime to defeat a very talented HTX Panthers. In the semifinals they pulled off a major upset against Hardwork and then battled to the very end with a 3 point victory over almost unbeatbable Team Gervin.
Sunday’s Lavender Varsity girls division might have been the most competive with four very talented groups. The championship wouldnt be decided until the very last game in which the Laredo United South girls going in with a 2-0 record. They would have to go threw a very solid San Antonio Mystic Knight team who desperately would need to win by alot to even place. The San Antonio Cardinals took care of business agaisnt the San Antonio Lady Toros and the Mystic Knights would pull off a large upset of the United South girls. This would leave a 3 way tie between the Cardinals, Mystic Knights, and United South teams. When the dust settled and the points were all added up the Mystic Knights and Cardinals both were +11 points and the United South girls would finish with +10 causeing a two-way tie between the Mystic Knights and Cardinals. Because the Cardinals had beaten the Mystic Knights in their morning game, they were crowed champions in the closest championship draw of the weekend.
