Excel Spring Break Invitational Recap

DSC04756 DSC04818 DSC04361 DSC05168The Excel Spring Break Invitational has always been the 1st event of the Spring Season.  This years transition from Fall to Spring brought 128 teams to the Alamo City to leave their successful school seasons behind and start their club seasons.   Teams from all over the State of Texas would test the best San Antonio can offer all weekend.

In Saturdays Silver American 8th Grade division you would see one of the best Private school programs in the Gervin Academy taking on an up and coming powerhouse from their neighbors up North in the Texas Warriors.  One thing that Gervin has been successful at is how talented their roster is from top to bottom.  Austin’s Texas Warriors would try to eliminate this advantage with physical and fundamental basketball.  While this was successful for a majority of the first half, in the second half the Gervin team would pull away with a constant press and aggressive offense not allowing the Austin boys to take home the cup.

The Purple 8th grade girls division would showcase the San Antonio Outlaws against the San Antonio Hurricanes.  While the Outlaws jumped out to a quick 10 point lead early the Hurricanes would fight back before half to cut the lead to four points.  As the game continued in the second half both teams competed hard but the overall championship experience of the Outlaws would prove to be too much for the Hurricanes in their first event of the year.

Sunday’s Platinum Varsity boys showcased a Bexar County Bandits teams with some of the better senior talent in San Antonio against the newbies to the Varsity boys field in San Antonio GATA.  Coach Hayes and Benavides would not allow youth to be an excuse in this championship.  From the tip the GATA team controlled the game with great ball control and patience.  GATA would make the Bandits press pay on the back end the entire game.  Every time the Bandits would fight back with their press the GATA boys would get easy baskets.  Look for many more victories from this GATA group in the varsity division.

The San Antonio Grizzlies would dominate the Blue National 5th Grade boys division Sunday with average victories of 23 points in their three victories.  They would face a very tough San Antonio Venom team in the championship who had a couple close victories in route to the championship.  The Grizzlies would prove to be too much and show that they are the early cream of the crop in the 5th grade boys division.

The San Antonio Mules 2nd Grade boys group learned from past experience to play for all three games in their champion finish.  They have been the best team in this Crimson division for the first 2 games in past events only to fall apart in their final game.  This time they would need a 11 point victory over the San Antonio Blue Devils who have dominated the Crimson Division the entire fall.  With a 13 point victory the Mules were able to take the Excel cup away from the Blue Devils for the first time in a very long time and even more rare drop them to 3rd place in the division.
