dsc07981dsc07688dsc06960dsc07249dsc08297dsc08501dsc07486The school year has started and kids are back into the swing of things.  In San Antonio our local basketball talent play year round and because of this you have seen San Antonio begin to rival our DFW and Houston neighbors.  With excellent talent, coaching, and supportive parents this weekend’s events would be full of instantly classic showdowns.

In the Green 4th grade boys division the championship would come down to the San Antonio Grizzlies and the Laredo Blackout.  Laredo Blackout dominated their division last year while ths Grizzlies were very successful in theirs.  Blackout would test their talent up a division and this would make for an epic championship game.  The younger Laredo Blackout team would jump out to an early lead but the Grizzlies would respond to every basket with their own run.  By the second half the Grizzlies had figured out how to contain the lightning quick Blackout team and were able to keep the Excel Cup at home in San Antonio.  The Grizzlies were led by Isaac Castillo (14.2ppg).

Texas Prime had a very successful weekend taking home 3 championships.  Coached by the brilliant coaching staff of Mark Jones and son Preston Jones we are seeing Texas Prime become the new power organization in Texas.  The Blue 5th grade boys would have to get by the established HD Toros organization in the championship. Led by Eddie Arroyo (12pts) and Luke Bellucci (9pts), Texas Prime would be able to escape a very good Toros team.  The Silver American TX Prime team would be lead by Hunter Darling’s 23 points as they were able to defeat one of the best 8th grade team in San Antonio in the Dream Loudly Boomers.  With Preston Jones winning 2 championship, it was time for Mark Jones to get one and he did with his Amber 9th grade boys championship win against San Antonio Arsenal.

The Gold American Junior Varsity boys championship would come down to the unbeatable San Antonio Falcons and the Laredo Rebels.   Saturday the Rebels would test that unbeatable title.  With steady guard play the Laredo Rebels would run threw pool play to set up the match up against the Falcons.  Any time the Falcons are in the championship its going to be a tough battle and this one would not be different.  With the lead changing back and forth Laredo Rebels Foro Villlareal would hit a couple late long bombs to put the game out of reach and take the Excel Cup back to Laredo.

The Lilac 5th/6th grade girls would come down to the San Antonio Lady Hoops and the Somerset Hoopstars.  Trying to revenge a loss three weeks ago from the Hoopstars, Lady Hoops were hungry to win their first Excel championship.  Lady Hoops Myranda Perales (17pts) would be huge for her team and the Hoopstars would not have an answer for her all game.  The San Antonio Lady Hoops would get their revenge and win the championship. Look for this to be a new rivalry for this upcoming year.

The San Antonio Fire lived up to their reputation in the Bronze 7th grade division. With two successful victories early they would have their hands full in their last game.  All the Fire would need to do is win and they would be the divisions champion but they would need to beat a very tough San Antonio Crew team.  The Crew would jump out to a 9-0 lead early before the Fire would need a timeout to calm down.  Even after the timeout the Fire had a hard time cutting into the lead.  At half time the Crew would still have a demanding lead but the second half would be total different story.  Led by Jayce Sibley and Eddie Arroya the Fire would go on a 34-6 run to not only win but win big.  While the Fire would win the championship the Next Level Raiders would take home second.
