With College and Pro Football in full effect its hard to believe that we would have any additional attention but this past Sunday all attention fell on the talent that gathered in Round Rock for the Excel Hoopfest. With teams from all over Texas including San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, San Angelo, Shreveport, and Laredo the talent pool couldn’t be any better setting up a memorable Excel Sunday.
In the Bronze 7th Grade boys division the championship came down to two very successful Austin organizations in the Austin Vipers and ATX Lockdown. Both groups were well coached which would lead to a very strategic championship showdown. Lockdown led by super guard Jacob Swoboda (19pts) would jump out to an early lead but never could get comfortable with a very good Viper group. When the dust cleared the ATX Lockdown boys would be too much.
The Amber 9th Grade boys division was so evenly matched that final placement could not be determined to the very last minutes of the last games. Jose Palma’s San Antonio Blue Devils, Austin New Era, and Team Killeen Elite would find themselves near even going into the last game. Austin New Era led by dynamic shooter Max Smith would need a victory against the Blue Devils led by the lock down defender in Jeremy Palma. With Smith coming off a 30 point performance he would remain hot to start the game. Team Killeen Elite would take care of business against the Copperas Cove Kings getting a 15 point victory so now their fate would be in the hands of the Blue Devils and Austin New Era. Close the entire way, the Blue Devils would hit some late clutch buckets to take a demanding lead and take the cup back home. Because of the 10 point victory New Era would fall into 3rd place elevating Team Killeen Elite into the runner-up spot. Great division.
The Rose JV Girls division would come down to the Liberty Hill Swoosh and Texas Bulldogs of San Angelo. The Swoosh have owned this division threw the Spring and Summer but the girls from San Angelo would have a different plan. With a close game between the two teams Liberty Hill’s experience would prove to be too much for the Bulldogs.
The Dallas Red Raiders from the Rockwall area would have a successful Sunday. Coach Mark Jones has been working hard with his boys all year and the work is finally paying off. The 8th grade boys led by the slashing finisher Guinten Milton (17.3 ppg) would defeat the Round Rock Rimrockers in the championship and the Junior Varsity boys would fall short to a very good Rimrockers Black team in their championship. Congrats to Coach Mark for all his dedication and hard work.
