Lots of great basketball in San Antonio for the January 30-31 Excel Get 2 the Hoop Classic. Saturday morning was up to the youngsters in the 2nd/3rd Grade division to entertain the packed gym at Gervin.
With three very evenly matched teams in the San Antonio Mules, San Antonio Fire, and San Antonio Lil Spurs the final placing came down to a last shot. Going into the last game of the division the San Antonio Mules held their fate in their own hands. Earlier beating the San Antonio Fire and San Antonio Extreme Speed, all they needed was a victory against the Lil Spurs. Early on you could see that this would be a challenge for the Mules with the game changing leads seven times. With the San Antonio Fire beating Extreme Heat in their last game, all they could hope for is a Mules loss in order to win their first Excel Cup. With the Mules up by 4 points with under a minute, the Lil Spur’s Caden Gonzalez took over the game hitting a long 2-point bomb and after a clutch stop hit a deep three to take a one point lead to the excitement of the entire crowd in attendance. The Mules had a couple close basket chances to win the game in the closing seconds but couldn’t get the ball to fall leaving the Lil Spurs with the victory and the San Antonio Fire with the championship. Truly a treat to see the young talent that battled it out. Congratulation to all the great young men and coaches in this spectacular division and great start to the event
The Blue American division was dominated by the San Antonio Gunners that surprisingly Basketball is their off-season sport. You would not be able to tell the way they played Saturday. While the Next Level Raiders and New Braunfels Warriors held their own, the Gunners were able to go 3-0 in Saturdays division and take home the Excel Cup. Would love to see this talented group on the baseball field.
The Orange American division was the showcase division of the day with great 6th grade teams including Austin’s ATX Youth Academy Knights, the New Braunfels Warriors, powerhouse organizations in the Next Level Raiders and San Antonio Hoops Elite, San Antonio Fusion, STX Hornets, Dream Loudly Boomers, and the nationally ranked 5th grade San Antonio Fire group. With four closely contested first round games, the NL Raiders, Fire, Hoops Elite, and New Braunfels Warriors made it to the semifinals. The young Fire proved to be a little too much for Coach Harrison’s Raiders and Hoops Elite took care of business against the Warriors of New Braunfels. In the championship the size and shooting of the San Antonio Hoops Elite proved to be a challenge for the smaller San Antonio Fire keeping it close. The experienced Fire team stayed consistent with their speed and effective press and they pulled away with the championship
Saturday’s Bronze Division had the San Antonio Mules, San Antonio Roadrunners, Texas Champions, and a reloaded San Antonio Ravens squad. The Ravens organization has experienced some low point the last couple years from what was considered one of the best groups in Texas to falling apart due to players leaving to other opportunities. The Ravens of new looked a lot like the the Ravens of old with strong guard play and solid bigs. Their biggest challenge came from an undermanned Texas Champions team missing four key players. It was good to see the Ravens back in championship form.
Saturday’s last championship came in what is always a competitive division in the Silver 8th Grade Division. With the D1 Ambassadors coming in from Killeen, the strong San Antonio programs were at their best. Jose Palma’s The San Antonio Blue Devils, Mustangs 2020, and San Antonio All Stars all had strong showings but when the dust settled the San Antonio Mustangs 2020 defeated the San Antonio All Stars in the championship. One side note was the opening game of the division between Mustangs 2020 and the Blue Devils of Coach Palma. In probably the best game of the day outside of the game between the Lil Spurs and Mules in the morning, the Mustangs 2020 pulled out a very close game in pool play.
